DENTAL IMPLANTS

Dental implants are titanium replacements of the tooth’s roots. Implants serve as anchors for an artificial tooth or teeth. A dental implant treatment is performed to replace missing teeth. If teeth are not replaced, patients may suffer bone loss, teeth shifting, bite issues, and difficulty chewing. At Valley Alder Family Dentistry, we offer the leading dental implant treatment for our patients.

Dental Implant Treatment Candidates

Candidates for a dental implant treatment wish to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Dr. Patel will meet with the patient one-on-one for a comprehensive consultation. Dr. Patel will spend time reviewing the patient’s medical and dental histories. During the consultation, Dr. Patel will perform an oral examination to assess the patient’s overall oral health. Dr. Patel will also perform a digital X-ray to review the health of the jawbone to support the implant. If the patient is a candidate, Dr. Patel will create a customized dental implant treatment plan. The patient may ask any questions or concerns about the dental implant process at this time. Dr. Patel will take time to educate the patient on the dental implant treatment as well as all pre- and post-treatment instructions.

Bone Grafting Procedure

A bone grafting procedure may be necessary if the patient does not have sufficient bone density to support the implant. Bone deterioration will occur if the tooth has been missing for a long period of time. A bone grafting procedure takes bone from the patient’s bone in another area of the body to create a bone graft. The bone will then be anchored to the jawbone to prepare for the dental implant.

Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant procedure is completed within two visits to Valley Alder Family Dentistry. During the first appointment, Dr. Patel will begin the dental implant procedure by placing the implant into the jawbone. Once the dental implant is placed, it will begin to fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration.
Dr. Patel will place the temporary restoration on the dental implant while the permanent crown is being created in the laboratory. Once the implant has healed, a dental implant abutment will be placed onto the dental implant to connect the post to the permanent crown.

Dental Implants Aftercare

Most dental implant results will heal within three months of the surgery. Patients should follow all post dental implant treatment instructions given by Dr. Patel. Patients should avoid all hard or sticky foods following the surgery. Patients may experience minor bleeding, swelling, and pain following dental implant treatment. All symptoms will subside within a week of the procedure. Good oral hygiene should be implemented to keep the implant and surgery site free from infection. Dr. Patel recommends patients schedule regular check-ups at Valley Alder Family Dentistry to maintain perfect oral health and maintain dental implant results.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants can last as long as natural teeth with proper care. The gums around the dental implant are still susceptible to gum disease. Patients should maintain good oral hygiene to maintain dental implant results.
